About Us
Our history, vision, and the people behind BUCC
Who We Are
The Bayview Ubuntu Community Centre (BUCC) is a multi-service, one-stop community development agency located in Bayview, Chatsworth, Durban. We serve as a hub for education, training, community engagement, and social support — empowering residents to improve their livelihoods and build a brighter future together.
Our name draws inspiration from the Nguni Bantu philosophy of Ubuntu — “I am because we are” — reflecting our deep belief that the well-being of every individual is tied to the strength of our community as a whole.
Our History
The BUCC was the realisation of a long-held dream by the Bayview Flats Residents Association (BFRA). BFRA Chairperson Brandon Pillay described it as a “long and winding road” — but the resilience of the Bayview community kept the vision alive, inspiring him to seek sponsorships and partnerships over many years.
The centre was made possible through the extraordinary generosity of the Sibaya Community Trust, founded by Durban businessman and philanthropist Vivian Reddy — whose relationship with the Bayview community began 25 years ago through the late political leader and activist, Fatima Meer. The Trust has contributed more than R270 million to support approximately 160 organisations across greater Durban and KwaZulu-Natal.
The BUCC officially opened in 2024 — a historic moment for Bayview — with a dedicated team of community volunteers leading its operations, guided by the vision of an empowered, self-sustaining community.
